If you’re stuck in the false notion of a true self, it will be impossible for you to grow. After all, if this is your true self, how could you be any different?
No Such Thing as a True Self
We are constantly changing, always evolving. From the moment we’re born to our last breath, every day and every moment shapes us.
You were one person before starting this blog post, and you’ve already changed after reading this far. By the time you’re done, you’ll be a different person again. The change may be subtle, but new thoughts will have entered your mind. And what are you if not your mind?
Heck, you’re a different person when you’re hungry compared to when you’re full. Notice how your mood and behavior shift between these states.
Ten years ago, your thoughts and beliefs about life were different from what they are now. You’ve evolved over time. So, is your true self who you were ten years ago, or is it who you are today?
Even right now, if I gave you ten chocolate bars, a part of you might want to eat them all, while another part knows it’s not the best idea. So, which part is the real you? The one giving in to temptation or the one exercising restraint?
Let me tell you. The real you is the one you allow to take control at that moment. If you eat all the chocolate bars, that’s the real you at that time. If you choose restraint, then that’s your real self.
You have as many “selves” as you have thoughts. Whichever one you act on becomes your true self in that moment.
The Prison
The idea of a fixed, true self is a trap that losers fall into. It’s a mental prison they lock themselves in. For example, if you want to be confident but believe you’re naturally shy and that’s your true nature, how can you ever develop confidence?
I’m naturally introverted, I’m non-manipulative, I’m like this, I’m like that—I can’t change my true self.
When you hear something speak that kind of language, know that you’re talking to a loser. They’re using the “true self” as an excuse to avoid change. They lack the drive and determination to improve. These are the imprisoned losers.
An introvert can become an extrovert. A shy person can become incredibly confident. Anyone can overcome social anxiety and embarrassment. You can transform into whoever you want to be. There’s no such thing as a fixed true self. The true self is whatever you choose it to be. Get out of the trap, the mental prison, and take charge of yourself.
Decide who you want to be, and be it.
