The debate around abortion has reignited after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, relegating the decision on whether abortion should be legal or illegal to the state governments. For over 40 years, abortion was a federally granted “constitutional” right in the US.
This has got progressive liberals going crazy and protesting on streets across the country, as conservative states push to outlaw abortion.
As many liberals disingenuously proclaim, overturning Roe v. Wade does not mean the country has banned abortion, it just means the decision is up to the states, which means away from the federal government and closer to the people—which includes both men and women voting for it.
I'll briefly summarize the key arguments from both sides before sharing my personal stance—the "but…" from the title of this post.
Conservative Perspective
Conservatives believe that life begins at conception. This belief is rooted in religion. As such, the extreme conservatives hold the extreme position that abortion is murder, regardless of the stage of pregnancy.
The moderate conservatives are generally accepting of abortion being legal in the first trimester, and open to debate thereafter depending on the situation such as rape or life-threatening risks to the mother.
Conservatives are strongly opposed to partial-birth abortions, which are late-term abortions where the fetus is fully formed and is killed during extraction.
Liberal Perspective
Progressive liberals, on the other hand, believe that a fetus is not life, which is squarely at odds with the view that life begins at conception. For this reason, there is no possibility of rational debate between conservatives and liberals.
In the liberal view, if the fetus is not alive, then terminating the pregnancy at any stage is not murder. As such, the woman can decide to get an abortion for any reason.
Although partial-birth abortion is illegal, late-term abortion is legal in many liberal states in the US.
The Difference
I am conservative on some issues and liberal on others. (On the whole, I am more conservative than liberal though.) Like any intelligent person, I try to stay balanced and open to reason from both sides.
Conservatives believe abortion is murder because life begins at conception. While that may be scientifically inaccurate, it stems from a sincere conviction—they see it as life and don’t want to harm it. I see no malice intended in that position. They aren’t looking to make a woman’s life difficult by denying her the right to abortion. And you can’t convince me otherwise that they hate women.
While I don’t hold the extreme conservative positions on issues, I find their intent to be—at least—not bad.
Unfortunately, for the most part, I can’t say the same about liberals. Their demand for abortion often seems rooted in their fixation with a degenerate lifestyle. They support women sleeping around and destroying their souls in the name of “freedom”, and they push for abortion as a way to escape the consequences. If you can’t agree with this, you only need to see liberal women celebrating abortion. Those images speak for themselves.
Their claim that “abortion is healthcare” and that is why they’re fighting for it does not seem sincere because most conservatives are not opposed to the right to abortion in dire health-related circumstances for the woman.
My View on Abortion
I don’t feel strongly against abortion in itself when it's necessary due to personal circumstances. It is, however, pure evil to glorify and celebrate it like liberals do.
It is one thing to bury one's guilt—and guilt there must be—and do the thing that makes life's inconvenience go away, but to elevate it as a virtue, something to be proud of, is where the line is crossed.
Abortion is often a necessary evil, but celebrating abortion is demonic.
If abortion does not damage a woman, she's already damaged in a more serious way than abortion could damage her.
Therefore, my advice to unmarried men is this: a woman’s stance on abortion is the most important thing you want to know when deciding on whether she’s fit to be the mother of your children.
